The Vision

Tell a friend about AG-ELLE

The AG-ELLE Vision

AG-ELLE provides opportunity and networking for women in the agriculture industry. The organization was borne of our passion for agriculture, our desire to succeed and our commitment to bettering the industry for the next generation.

Women in agriculture are a unique and powerful group. Many juggle an off-farm job and farm work, on top of family, household duties and everyday life. They are the backbone of their families, their communities and the industry.

How AG-ELLE got started

A group of seven amazing women met in Banff for a weekend in April 2008 -- braving the worst storm of the winter to build the framework for an organization focused on women in agriculture.

Several goals came out of the discussion:

  • to provide a means for women in agriculture to get to know one another
  • to allow for the exchage of information and ideas
  • to support the next generation of women in agriculture

AG-ELLE Goals

We all want to support one another professionally and personally. It often happens that we can use some help, and wouldn't it be great if there was a network of contacts to access? For example, you need a news release to promote your farm's sale, or an ad for the company you work for. Or you are looking for a job in animal pharmecuticals. Or you are exhibiting at a livestock show for the first time and want to know what to expect. The possibilities to support each other are endless.

The group also wanted to pay tribute to the women who paved the way for females in a male-dominated industry, and provide opportunity for young women to stay in agriculture. After a great brain storming session, they came up with the idea of "Experience Scholarships." Rather than give students cash, they could be given the opportunity to attend a conference or exhibition that would further their professional goals, or job shadow a successful woman in the sector of the industry that interests them.

Finally, all of the ladies appreciated the weekend away and getting to know each other better. We all need a break once in a while, and so the social aspect of AG-ELLE is also important. The group plans to facilitate weekend retreats, workshops and fundraisers as it grows in members.
